Picnic Punch Quilt Pattern
I am so excited to introduce to you the Picnic Punch Quilt!! Summer’s approaching and I find myself in a situation where I will be spending a lot of time outdoors with my kiddos. With that in mind, I designed Picnic Punch to be the perfect picnic quilt! It comes in three sizes to meet your personal picnicking needs: Date Night, which is equivalent to a typical throw size and uses 5 colors; Picnic, an excellent size for a standard picnic; and Family, for when everyone is in on the fun! Picnic Punch also includes instructions for a bonus block (and layout suggestions for using these blocks in a second project) created with just one extra seam per block for even more options!
Aaaand, it comes with an optional add on for the Watermelon Edition! Read on for all the details.
The Basics
Skill Level: Beginner: one block, chain piecing, lots of easy instructions.
Sizes: Date Night (5 colors), Picnic (6 colors), and Family (7 colors) to accommodate all your picnicking needs! If you want something a little bigger or smaller, it is block based so just add on or eliminate blocks as needed.
A Bonus Block: Keep your trimmings to make a bonus block for a pillow, pouch, or coordinating picnic tote!
Sale: 20% off all Picnic Punch pattern sales from the release date through the weekend (April 20th). No code necessary.
It is on Sale!!
Well, why not?! Picnic Punch is 20% off now through the end of the weekend (April 20th), no code needed.
If you are still looking for a deal after the sale ends, the Picnic Punch and Watermelon Edition (keep reading!!) are bundled together so you can save on both!
Quilt Kits!
Global Fiber Shop has put kits together for the Picnic Punch cover quilt AND the Picnic Punch Watermelon Edition. Both are made from Ruby Star Society Speckleds and are my faaaavs. Head on over to the shop to get yours now!
Watermelon Edition!!
Oh My GOODNESS! When we realized there was a way to give Picnic Punch a watermelon makeover, we just couldn’t help ourselves. Originally, we just made a sample, but it was instantly clear to us that folks would want to know how to do it themselves. Thus, the Watermelon Edition Add On of the Picnic Punch quilt was born!
This edition is an ADD ON with fabric requirements and block counts only. You must also have the original Picnic Punch version to make the quilt.
TIP: Purchase the Picnic Punch combo which contains both the pattern and the add-on at a discount!
Global Fiber Shop has kits for this in all sizes - go get yours now!!
Make it Your Own!
If you look through your stash its good to remember this quilt works best with solid or like solid fabrics so the little accent triangles (I think of them as butterflies) can stand out. When the background fabrics get too busy, the butterflies get lost.
While I’ve not written instructions for a scrappy version of this quilt in this pattern, those of you who like to walk your own path could certainly get creative and make it however you like. I could see it being fun to mix up all the background colors throughout the quilt rather than leave them in their color blocks. A few of the early versions we made as teachers’ gifts change up the number of rows for each color for some fun gradients and variations. The Watermelon Edition is a great example of this!
Bonus Block
One of the most fun components of this pattern is the bonus block. It shows how to take advantage of the trimmings so nothing goes to waste! The bonus block can be used to make all sorts of things - a pillow, a bag, a wall hanging, a tiny quilt for your tiny dog… whatever you can imagine! We include some ideas but if I know my people, you all are going to use your imaginations to use those extra pieces in all sorts of wonderful ways.
Mock Ups!
I could have made a million mock ups for you. It was so fun to try all different colors in all different ways. Below we have beachy summer feels, light and subtle, dark and moody, and gradients…. I hope they ignite your imagination for your own favorite color combo! It should be noted that these are all in the Date Night size using 5 colors. You’ll get to add one more color for the Picnic size, and go all the way up to 7 colors for the Family size.
I could keep adding sections to this post - backing choices, panto suggestions…. but I think we’ve covered a lot. Plus, you are probably not even here right now because you were so excited to get started on the quilt you’ve already bought the pattern and are currently cutting your fabric. Good for you! So for now, this is enough. And if you ARE still with me - WHY ARE YOU?? Click over to the shop and get your Picnic Punch AND Picnic Punch Watermelon Edition now!!
